Question
My yorkie tends to drink alot of water and he wee’s in the house atleast once a day.
Is it because he is 12 years old and has other problems?
Also how much water should he drink everyday?
Answer
Is this something which has increased recently?
He is an elderly dog and there might be a health reason for this, however I would not be able to say whether this is the case.
I know that kidney problems and possibly diabetes could cause your yorkie to drink more water.
Have you recently changed dog food? The new food might be causing your yorkie to drink more.
A yorkie should on average drink 1 ounce of water per lb of weight, or so I was told when we bought Harry, however he drinks a bit more than this. He has on average just under a cup of water/day.
This does however depend on how much exercise he has got on a certain day and what time of the year it is. In summer months it is always more than winter.
If it has been an increase that has caused you concern I would consult a vet just to set your mind at ease.

Too much water can be a sign of cushings disease….
Pleas, take your dog to the vet and have them do blood work for cushings disease …. My dog was diagnosed with cushings disease after I noticed his extreme thirst ….
